Merlyn Chesterman - Woodblock Artist
Growing up in Hong Kong, studying Fine Art under Adrian Heath and Howard Hodgkin at Bath Academy of Art and travelling to Northern China heavily influences Merlyn’s style of working.
Merlyn now resides in Hartland and her study of this rugged coastline, where the light sparkles, the rocks force up from the ground in sharp lines and the sea is of pewter, often leads to her work capturing its raw, relentless and unforgiving nature. Merlyn became a woodblock artist in 2000 and since then has exhibited in many prestigious galleries, including the V&A, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Ashmolean. She also shows annually with the Society of Wood Engravers and the Society of Painter-Printmakers. Merlyn still travels back to China and recently returned from an Arts Council funded study trip to the Purple Bamboo Studio at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Merlyn is also a part of a collaboration of woodblock printmakers known as Pine Feroda.
