The Makers Series // Maker No.3 Merlyn Chesterman

Merlyn was raised in Hong Kong, where she cultivated a passion for the arts and studied under the tutelage of Adrian Heath and Howard Hodgkin at Bath Academy of Art. Her encounters with Northern China significantly influenced her artistic approach. Presently, she is situated in Hartland where she draws inspiration from the rugged coastline, characterised by sparkling light and rocky formations rising abruptly from the ground. Her artwork often features the raw, relentless, and unforgiving nature of the pewter-coloured sea.
Merlyn became a woodblock artist in 2000 and has showcased her work in esteemed galleries, including the V&A, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and The Ashmolean. She regularly exhibits with the Society of Wood Engravers and the Society of Painter-Printmakers. She is still actively engaged in travel to China and has historically been funded by the Arts Council to visit the Purple Bamboo Studio at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Additionally, she is a part of a collective of woodblock printmakers recognized as Pine Feroda.
